La déconstruction de l’îlot Franche-Amitié à Saint-Étienne (P.Chavassieux

La présentation explore les conditions de mise en œuvre du projet de déconstruction dans trois terrains français que sont Saint-Étienne, Roubaix et Toulon dont les centres anciens sont caractérisés par un déclin à la fois social, économique et du bâti.
Contrairement à la manière dont la déconstruction se présente depuis les années 2000, c’est-à-dire comme une démolition parcimonieuse à l’échelle du bâti visant à recycler les déchets engendrés par l’opération, elle recouvre en fait une réalité spatio-temporelle plus large. Selon la définition que nous lui attribuons dans la thèse, la déconstruction, en tant que projet d’aménagement, désigne une action sur la matérialité du bâti visant à trier les éléments susceptibles de valoriser un site, et ceux qui ne le servent plus. Une telle opération résulte d’un arbitrage réécrivant la trajectoire temporelle d’un espace afin qu’il épouse la morphologie sociale de l’ensemble dans lequel il est inclus. Par les fondations d’un lieu et les matériaux qui l’établirent, la déconstruction effectue un remodelage conscientisé de l’espace et du temps. Elle incarne un processus éthique, rendant la ville à ses habitants, et en les engageant à la pratiquer de nouveau.
Cette définition, qui n’a pu être établie qu’au travers d’allers-retours dans l’histoire, fût stimulée à l’origine par des projets contemporains ayant attiré notre attention. Dans le cadre de programmes nationaux de renouvellement urbain à Saint-Étienne, Roubaix et Toulon, sont engagés des projets où la démolition semble préfigurer la recomposition spatiale de l’îlot, à partir de l’analyse des composantes sociales et matérielles existantes. Dans quelles mesures peut-on aujourd’hui mettre en œuvre un projet de déconstruction ? À quelles conditions ?

Architecte diplômée de l’ENSA Saint-Étienne, Pauline Chavassieux mène une thèse en aménagement de l’espace depuis janvier 2017 à l’université Jean Monnet (EVS-ISTHME), en codirection avec le laboratoire des Métiers de l’Histoire de l’Architecture (MHAevt) à l’ENSA Grenoble et en lien étroit avec les activités du GRF Transformations de l’ENSASE.
