Questionner la figure de l’architecte et son champ d’action

L’École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Lyon (LAURE), en partenariat avec l’Université de Tours (InTRu), lance un appel à contributions pour une journée d’études intitulée Marges et interstices en histoire de l’architecture (XVIIIe au XXIe siècle) II : Questionner la figure de l’architecte et son champ d’action, qui aura lieu à l’ENSAL le 5 février 2019.

Argumentaire

La journée d’études proposée est le second volet d’une réflexion sur les marges en histoire de l’architecture, qui a déjà donné lieu à l’organisation d’une première journée d’études, le 5 février 2018, à l’Université de Tours. Conformément au désir initial de l’appel à communications (2017) et au caractère éminemment polysémique des termes « marge » et « interstice », les huit présentations de la première journée ont permis d’explorer plusieurs manières de concevoir, d’utiliser et de mettre en perspective ces notions ; ceci dans une chronologie élargie allant du XVIIIe au XXe siècle et souvent à la frontière – précisément – de plusieurs champs d’étude (architecture et photographie, paysage, philosophie, histoire, sociologie).

Plusieurs thèmes ont été abordés, nous incitant à faire un pas de côté et nous faisant voir la norme sous un jour nouveau. Car, en creux, c’est aussi de normes, toujours intellectuellement construites dans des temps et milieux donnés, et de catégories, à géométrie variable ou aux contours poreux, dont il a été question. La notion de marge, du point de vue de la tradition historiographique de la discipline architecturale, appelle aussi celle de la réception, immédiate ou différée – selon un concept déjà bien connu – mais également « fabriquée » ou « spontanée ». Par ailleurs, l’analyse d’un édifice, d’un programme architectural ou d’une personne au prisme de sa médiatisation révèle des hiatus et des postures complexes, parfois paradoxales. Ces questions sont toujours au centre des réflexions portées par le second volet de ces rencontres. Le comité d’organisation souhaite ainsi poursuivre son exploration sans a priori de terrains / acteurs / objets / approches potentiellement marginales ou interstitielles, temporairement ou de façon pérenne, la confrontation des expériences et des regards s’avérant particulièrement stimulante.

Plusieurs pistes nous paraissent pouvoir être approfondies. La question des activités « annexes » du maître d’oeuvre, à l’image des recherches de Valérie Nègre et de Robert Carvais sur les contours et implications de la fonction d’« expert » à l’époque moderne et qui mériterait également d’être précisée à l’époque contemporaine. Il nous semble intéressant de mettre en perspective la figure de l’architecte-conseil, de l’architecte-élu ou de l’architecte-rénovateur dans son implication directe ou indirecte dans la fabrique de la ville. Quels sont alors ses moyens d’action, son aura, ses références ? Y a-t-il des interstices identifiables favorables à son action ?
Nous aimerions également questionner la marge d’un point de vue frontal en interrogant son corollaire « l’abandon », dans le champ de l’architecture et de l’urbanisme. Comment se fabrique une déshérence, un oubli – programmé ou involontaire –, et la limite qui l’accompagne ? Est-il possible de penser et d’évaluer l’oubli alors qu’il n’y a pas destruction ? Enfin, que disent les architectes ou les commanditaires de l’abandon, du sacrifice ou de la méfiance envers l’un de leur bâtiment ?

Dans le cadre de cette journée, les méthodes, les corpus et les discours demeurent des champs d’observation constants, qu’ils proviennent de chercheurs confirmés ou de jeunes chercheurs. Nous envisageons ce nouvel événement comme une journée de recherche commune où le public, les intervenants et les membres du comité scientifique et d’organisation puissent débattre à bâtons rompus et évaluer des partis pris scientifiques qui n’ont que peu l’occasion de se rencontrer autour de l’architecture et de ses mécanismes de création. D’une façon plus générale, cette nécessité d’échanger autour de nos approches nous conduit également à être particulièrement attachés à faire de ce nouveau rendez-vous un de ces trop rares moments de dialogue entre modernistes et contemporanéistes.

  • Abandon programmé ou involontaire
  • Statut et fonctions protéiformes de l’architecte
Modalités pratiques de soumission

Cette journée d’étude aura lieu à l’École nationale supérieure d’architecture de Lyon (Vaulx-en-Velin) le 5 février 2019. Une prise en charge des frais de transport des intervenants est prévue.
Les propositions de communication (résumés de 1 500 signes précisant le titre de l’intervention et les principaux éléments de l’argumentaire, accompagnés d’une courte biographie de l’intervenant) sont à envoyer par mail, avant le 15 septembre 2018, à l’adresse suivante : archimarges@gmail.com

Le comité de sélection se réunira à la fin du mois de septembre.
Un projet de publication est envisagé à l’issue de la seconde journée d’études, réunissant l’ensemble des contributions des deux volets (2018 et 2019).
